Our Treatment Sequence

nerve treatment

1. Consultation

A clinical and radiographic examination is performed to determine if root canal treatment is needed and if there are special treatment considerations such as restorability by your dentist after treatment.  We will answer any questions you have at this appointment.

2. Treatment

A local and/or intravenous anesthetic is given and a rubber dam is placed to isolate the tooth to keep it clean and dry.  Then an opening is painlessly made through the top of the tooth.  Instruments clean and shape the root canals so they can be filled with a rubber-type material (gutta percha) that seals the tooth to prevent reinfection.  Retreatment involves removing old leaking material and replacing it with new gutta percha.  This may mean removing the existing restoration.  Occasionally, we may need to do surgery through the gum in order to seal the tooth properly.

3. Follow-up Treatment

When your root canal treatment has been completed, it is important for you to contact your dentist so that he or she may provide a permanent restoration for your tooth.  Our office will examine your tooth periodically until it has been completely healed.
